As a businessman, one of the main questions that would-be entrepreneurs often ask us is ‘what can I do to get rid of my competition and help my business stand
out amongst the rest’?
As far as our answers are concerned, in order to have a competitive advantage over everyone else, we generally break them down into the following five points:
1. Don’t copy!
2. Deccomoditize your product!
3. Pick a fight!
4. Underdo your competition!
5.Don’t worry about what your competitors are doing!
Now, at first glance, some of those points may seem pretty harsh and possibly even weird to some of you, but stick with us, because these methods have been tried and tested over the years, and they helped us shape our business into the powerhouse that it is today. Here are each of the five points listed above to gain that competitive advantage, broken down with a little more info and advice.
One of the main mistakes that many businesses seem to make, is copying their opponents and not thinking up ideas of their own. We live in a world which seemingly consists of recycled idea after recycled idea, which begs the question: Where are the people with minds of their own? People see an idea being successful and think they can simply replicate it and enjoy the same levels of success, when in actual fact, the reason the initial idea was so successful in the first place, was because it had never been done before, making it 100% unique. As well as giving your customers the impression that you can’t think for yourself, you also don’t learn anything as you’re simply doing what has already been done.
If you don’t know how to be unique, then look below for 29 ways on how to stay creative and to get that competitive advantage!
Decommoditize your product!
When you enjoy great success, others try emulate you and your services, that’s just the way of the world. To ensure that you protect you and your business or products from copycats, ensure that you inject a little bit of yourself into your products and services. Try to instil your own beliefs, work ethic and ethos’ into your business. Make it unique so that it stands out preventing others from copying it. There are so many businesses that get created every single day, so make sure you’re different!! Look at some of those stats below and you’ll understand what we’re talking about! Create your own competitive advantage today!
Pick a fight!
Not a literal fist fight of course, but if your competitors suck, say so and let your potential clients and customers know that they suck, before explaining why your product and services are better. If something does suck, people will have noticed, and they’ll respect and admire you for standing up for your morals and saying what everybody else has been thinking.
Underdo your competitors!
With the economy currently in the state that it’s in, conventional wisdom states that in order to beat your competitors, you’ll have to one-up them in order to gain the upper hand. If they spend $20,000 on advertising, you should spend $30,000. If you think this is the right approach, you’re actually dead wrong. Rather than trying to beat them and one-up them, instead you should be trying to do less than them and beat their prices. Offer similar better quality services or products, for less money. Sometimes simplicity is the key and rather than confusing your customers with fancy words and features, why not make things black and white instead? That way everybody knows exactly what they’re paying, and exactly what they’re getting for their money.
Don’t worry about what your competitors are doing!
At the end of the day, your main goal should be to make your business or product as successful and popular as is humanly possible. Worrying about what the competition is doing can be time-consuming, frustrating, and even detrimental in some instances too. If you offer great products and services, let these speak for themselves instead. Rather than focussing on what somebody else is doing, why not focus on what you’re doing instead?
